| The benefits of cosmetic surgery |

Everyone these days is talking about the merits of cosmetic surgery and whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Over the last ten years, cosmetic surgery has undergone a vast surge in popularity and availability. Some of the most common treatments include breast augmentation, liposuction and nose surgery, otherwise known as rhinoplasty. These treatments all have one thing in common; they aim to improve the appearance of the patient at their request. But the real question is why these patients want to improve their appearance. Is it simply because of outside societal pressure s to conform? The pressure on us, especially younger people in our society, to look a certain way is indeed a factor but is this really a new phenomenon? Not really, the difference is now we are able to do something about it. Critics of cosmetic surgery would argue that to artificially change the way we look just to conform to a societal idea of what looks best is wrong. That we should be happy with who we are and how we were made. In an ideal world maybe this would be the case, but the reality is that we are all judged by our appearances and judge others the same way. It's not that we even do it maliciously, or deliberately even; it just happens. We see someone and we make an immediate assessment about them. It's human nature and what's more, we all do it. That is why so many of us worry about our appearance. Is this a justification for cosmetic surgery? Well, in itself perhaps not but when you consider the damage that this worry and anxiety can do then maybe it does. Appearance anxiety can be the cause of depression, low self-esteem and many other emotional problems. Seeing as we are able to easily remedy them with cosmetic surgery, is it not better that we do. A lot of the fuss about cosmetic surgery is because it is new. We are naturally afraid of change and progress but it is up to us to overcome this. In recent times it was the advent of cosmetic dentistry wit procedures such as tooth whitening guide and dental bonding that transformed our appearance. Once revolutionary, they are now everyday. No more unusual than a haircut and no more controversial. One day it will be the same for rhinoplasty surgery or breast augmentation to be fully accepted and really, is that so bad? |
